How to stop the oil leak

Added by vanillacarmel 2010-05-28 07:18:06 in #environment

Use 1 or multiple high pressure air or gas actuated plugs designed for water pipe leaks or tunnel collapse support that are designed to withstand the oil and water pressure greater than present and designed to fit into 22"pipe. Use a high pressure gas for deployment, similar to or like the concept in airbags. Robotically insert the plug deep into the pipe and use a remote and/or robotic activation device to deploy the plug thereby stopping the leak long enough to fill it with ready prepared solids and until relief wells were complete.

How to stop the oil leak

Added by amandajules 2010-05-28 07:18:23 in #environment

I'm a mechanical Engineer,...and this may be a way to stop the leak and use the actual oil pressure to seal it. A long sleeve with a pressure relief valve in the center, is inserted into the pipe. The pressure relief valve it open at first, allowing the oil to pass while the device is inserted. The device has teeth facing the reverse direction of the pressure. It also has several o-rings. Once in, the valve is closed, the cylinder expands outward against the pipe using the oil pressure itself. When the pressure tries to push the device out, the teeth automatically dig into the inner bore of the pipe and prevent its being pushed out. The o-rings are also pressed against the inner diameter by the pressure, sealing off the leak

They need to make a tapered tip pipe about 8 ft long with a series of cut outs inside the pipe would have a series of rubber bladders with one way check valves. the robot could grip the rod and insert in the leaking pipe and the the rod has compressed air put it the the bladder inflates sealing against the wall. the check valve keeps air from leaking . The series of bladders spaced apart will aid as a series balloon blockages.

How to stop the oil leak

Added by housemd 2010-05-27 07:19:34 in #environment

I am a physician and the idea I propose has worked in arterial bleeding (which may be similar to high pressure oil leaks). A catheter with an inflatable cuff is advanced against the flow into the lumen of the leaking vessel (in this case, a pipeline). Once advanced downstream the inflatable balloon is inflated reducing or perhaps stopping the flow entirely. For an oil leak of this magnitude, the catheter would need to be a rigid pipeline itself with a diameter significantly smaller than the leaking pipe. It would also need to be a significant length. In medicine, we use these catheters for angioplasty and use a similar catheter called a "Fogarty" catheter for arterial clots.

The portal could gain information directly from educationally bodies and allow students to use one form to gain all the information and enrol if they want to.

Solar Plant on the Moon

Added by mrsunbeam 2010-06-02 08:56:59 in #technology

Here's an idea so crazy it might work: a solar plant on the Moon. Specifically, a 6,800 mile long solar belt that spans the Moon's equator and sends energy back to Earth with lasers and microwave power. Japanese firm Shimizu is calling their lunar solar power generation concept the Luna Ring and it's brilliantly ambitious. The way the Luna Ring works is by gathering solar energy with a 6,800 mile long solar belt across the Moon's equator that'll be transmitted to Moon-based energy conversion facilities. The converted power will then be beamed to Earth-based facilities with laser power and microwave power. Once on Earth, we'll be able turn all that power into electric power for our power grids or hydrogen fuel. Robots will handle the lunar-side construction with most building materials coming from the moon. The benefit of having solar panels on the Moon is that it eliminates inefficiency due to bad weather and allows it to achieve 24/7 continuous power generation. Oh, and the fact that we'll have a freaking power plant on the Moon sending lasers at the Earth isn't anything to sneeze at either. If this Luna Ring ever gets built it'll join a growing number of robot Moon bases in the works. Which will obviously lead to Robot Revolution with all the robots banding together and hijacking the Moon—stealing all our power in the process

I have a great idea for LittleBigPlanet 2, have the option for shuffle for online levels. This means you can just enjoy the great levels instead of browsing through lists.

Kill the SAT

Added by apolloeye 2011-02-14 15:26:51 in #education

In 2001 Robert Atkinson, the president of the University of California, proposed the school's admissions discontinue its SAT requirement. He argued that the test is old-fashioned, that it does not measure appropriate skills given the requirements of No Child Left Behind. Another popular argument is that the SAT gives richer parents a chance to put their kids through a grinding tutorial process that inherently puts them at an advantage over students without the means. As this article points out, "when Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania and Bates College in Maine stopped requiring the SAT, minority applications doubled."

I have a great idea for a website but I don't have all the skills to make it happen, so I am submitted it here in the hope someone will create it. Create a virtual creature/organism/android/entity on a webpage that you have to nurture. To do this you need to send it web traffic whether it be your friends on Facebook or people on Twitter or any website. The creature will grow and develop based on what traffic you feed it and once it has reached a certain level you can interact with your closest neighbours maybe they can play maybe they fight - like Pokémon but cooler and it could even have an Android app so you can keep tabs on how your create is developing. Please leave all thoughts and questions.

FPS Pee Take

Added by apolloeye 2011-03-22 09:29:14 in #entertainment

Create an FPS game that takes the mickey out of every other FPS out there for example:

In multiplayer perks could be:

lag: you jump around the screen like you are lagging
no collision: allows you to walk through walls
graphics fail: causes the other team to see no textures
point blank survival: if you are shot at point blank and only point blank you survive

If a player camps then a visual tent starts appearing around them.

The campaign can also be an over-the-top macho fest, with a linear yet absurd storyline about aliens and the fight for human kind.

Weapons could include the chainsaw launcher, teabag shotgun and pwnage machine gun that has a one shot kill with a 500 round clip.

Vehicles could include dinosaurs with lasers and a piggy back ride on Chuck Norris.

Clever Home Router

Added by apolloeye 2011-04-29 08:41:50 in #technology

Often there are only ever 3 concurrent devices online in any home.
Browser can preload links at the client level, but this often results in a slowdown to the user and increased CPU load.
I believe home routers should be more advanced, so when pages are loaded the router pre-loads links related. So that when for instance a Google search result page loads the router begins preloading all of the resulting pages, or when a user is on a website the router begins to pre-load other pages on the website.
If done right, the user should get a faster more stream-lined experience.

Outdated copyright, libel and censorship laws threaten a free , fair and safe internet. This issue also involves protecting/funding quality and balance in media/arts.

Drastic changes to copyright, libel and censorship laws needed to maintain democracy in the internet age!
The internet user protection directive.

THE ISSUE: The copyright, censorship and libel laws throughout the European Union were devised before the internet, and indeed from before recorded media. In order to protect freedom, privacy and intellectual property the very concepts have to be redefined. This problem has caused the following effects:

a) Due to the internets non-geographical nature, libel and other types of defamation legislation whether criminal or civil become almost randomly defined. Not just on the jurisdiction either- similar variation exists from court to court, as to the sentencing which can often vary from community service to a hefty jail sentence for the same offence
Libel is interesting because it concerns both privacy and freedom of information issues. On one hand, it is very important to protect the right of a person or group to not have their social lives, reputations or careers harmed by false or misleading stories.
On the other hand, we have the right to know of any misdemeanours concerning public figures, powerful figures or enterprises that we might be dealing with. And surely we dont want children (or young minded adults) barred from talking about the latest playground rumour about their favourite celebrities. Of course, this has huge implications for the culture of Satire which lightens heavy topics, as well as providing the entertainment that we have enjoyed since Shakespeare and before. Do we want a world where truth is defined by having the most expensive lawers?
This suggests that the only alternative to draconian censorship or outright anarchy is a targeted enforcement of defamation legislation. Such a move would involve limiting all forms of defamation prosecutions and lawsuits to cases where profit, gain or malice could be reasonably proven. As well as targeting the police and courtroom costs, essentially a finite resource, this brings the definition of free speech to the general public consensus. That is, it is acceptable to use all forms of free speech, without knowingly harming others with ones words.

b) Due again to the multi-jurisdictional nature of the internet, and the lack of co-operation between government authorities and rival software manufacturers, there is no coherent approach to the issue of properly censoring potentially offensive material on the internet. Fruitless effort is poured in to shutting down illegal or ethically questionableâ websites, FTP sites and chatrooms. What is more important, and more achievable is preventing children and the easily offended from accessing this material by accident or curiosity. As internet content is less rigidly controlled than the film, print or music industry, state censorship would be unworkable. However requiring all content creators to self rate their material on the same grounds as a DVD , could be achieved. Failure to rate correctly could be made a criminal offence. Software could be designed with a standardised content-rating system which would allow safer family enjoyment and warning properly displayed if the content was of a nature that could easily offend.

c) The enforcement and management of copyright law is impractical under current legislation. Digital media makes copying and converting media a matter of mouse clicks. All forms of a digital rights management systems are crackable- almost all of the worlds governments strictly forbid the commercial use of such sophisticated cipher technology on national security grounds. Also, to severely restrict the right of distribution of multimedia products is a violation of the rights of independent media producers who wish to use the internet as a showcase for there talent,. Perhaps even more importantly, make the films and records that Hollywood don’t want you to watch or hear. This amounts to a violation of the basic rights of free expression.
Producers of multimedia content of any kind need to be remunerated for their efforts. It is not a cheap or time-free affair to produce music, books or films even as a hobby. The people who make the TV and movies we enjoy are morally entitled to a fair degree of contribution toward financing their art from their audience.
There are two ways of improving the situation. Firstly, there needs to be the replacement of copy protection to copyright watermarking. Any uploads to the internet of copyright material would have to be digitally watermarked with a copyright license. This would allow media producers to tract their digital assets across the internet. Any enterprise attempting to extract profit or gain out of copyrighted work would be obliged to pay a reasonable surcharge.
However, copyright holders should only have the access to details of private domestic internet account holders in the event of uploads of copyright material. This is because it is impossible for a user to distinguish legal from illegal download sites and servers. Nor until the completion of the download is it possible to accurately determine whether the material is copyright and which licence it is subject to.
It needs to be an offence to upload copyrighted material until one year old onto the internet unless authorised to do so by the copyright holder. One year because of the pace at which the online community moves. Conventional copyright rules involves terms of between fifty and one hundred years. This is impractical due to the nature of the sheer volume of material available on line. It is most important to protect the livelihoods of those currently active in the industry, as this represents the media industry’s future. Other than that condition, like libel, copyright enforcements against domestic internet users should be considered only in cases of profit, gain or malice. Again, this is not a case so much of a liberal approach, but a practically and fairly enforceable one.
The issue of filesharing could be handled via a surcharge per gigabyte of copyrighted, unlicenced media download, with a clearing house system estimating from the details provided by watermarking and reimbursing the copyright royalties to the appropriate holder. The ISP would be surcharged by the copyright authorities as opposed to the end user to protect privacy. This would allow the end user to choose an ISP package that reflects their downloading habits. Those who download or share copyright material would need to be on a higher tariff than those who do not to cover the surcharge costs.

Taxing Spam Generating Companies

Added by mrbungay 2010-05-21 12:19:41 in #business

I propose a special tax on companies that generate spam email. It could go something like this: Companies, or individuals that send out mass emails are taxed 1 cent for every mailing they put out. This would not include emails that are legitimate; a large company sends out emails to "subscribers", or people who knowingly signed up to get thier newsletters, or "notices".

This tax would only include mass, random emails. I think that this might eliminate some needless spam, but even if it does not, more tax money will be generated, so as to cut down on other taxes that we have to pay.

Also, this would require companies to submit forms to the government to get "permission" to send out mass spam. Instead of simply trying to rid the internet of spam, much like we did with those annoying "spam" phone calls, we could raise much needed funds.

How to stop the oil leak

I believe an inflatable bladder could stop or if nothing else significantly contain this leak. The principle is similar to the inflatable tool used to open and clean out a human artery. Rank Everything

Added by apolloeye 2011-02-14 15:28:12 in #education

Ranking is fun and controversial, but when it comes to identifying the best schools, it's also crucial. Harold Levy says the Dept of Education should start ranking colleges and universities publicly to give parents and students a better guide than US News & World Report. And why not do the same for high schools, too? If we mandated a national standardized test, it would not only remove the pernicious incentives among states to lower the bar for students, but also it might allow the government to provide an fair ranking of elementary and high schools both within and across state lines to provide a clearer picture of which schools are rising up or falling behind.

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, Clan Messaging– it was a great way to keep in touch with clan mates.

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, Some form of customization for clan games.

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, The ability to schedule matches so we don’t get uneven matches.

Killzone 3 Stat Tracking

Added by alphamale22 2011-03-01 09:19:15 in #entertainment

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, The deep stat tracking from K2, but with more– this is a sequel, so logically you should be tracking even more, not giving us a reduced list of tracked stats! This goes for both single player and multiplayer, single player doesn’t even have any stat tracking except for best times and deaths.

Killzone 3 Replay Online

Added by alphamale22 2011-03-01 09:19:39 in #entertainment

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, The replay mode from Killzone2.com! Again, it’s a sequel, so where is a fully 3D theater mode like we see in so many other games? Even if you can’t add it in, why not bring back the 2D replay mode from K2?It was allowed for studying clans, catching cheaters, why remove this?

Tags: video games, Killzone 3, ps3

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, The ability to run while I look at the scoreboard. Why remove this after, you patched it in for Killzone 2? I don’t understand.

Tags: video games, Killzone 3, ps3

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, Custom Soundtrack– I want nothing more than to blast my tunes and play some Killzone 2, but again, a featured that is completely removed for the excuse that “it couldn’t fit onto the disc”? Or was it that they didn’t have enough time?

Killzone 3 Custom Games

Added by alphamale22 2011-03-01 09:20:29 in #entertainment

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, Bring back custom games, it has to have more options! We can’t even party up with friends as much. Please Guerilla Games, give us more options like turning off grenades, pistols only, no rpgs, etc.

Killzone 3 DLC Weapons

Added by alphamale22 2011-03-01 09:21:09 in #entertainment

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, he DLC weapons like boltgun and flamethrower. At least in custom games, I can understand balancing issues with these if classes could run with it.

Killzone 3 Medic Aura

Added by alphamale22 2011-03-01 09:24:01 in #entertainment

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, How about the "aura" of medics? Can we make that something they turn "on"? Because nobody seems to know about it, and it sounds dumb to stand beside a medic to instant-heal without seeing this "aura".

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, Bring back the Sentry drones’ ability to stay around even after the player dies. Just like with C4. Except, C4 should disappear after you die. This way players could use their rockets for actually taking out the sentries instead of taking me out in Guerilla Warfare.

Killzone 3 Sniper Sway

Added by alphamale22 2011-03-01 09:25:04 in #entertainment

I have a great idea for Killzone 3, Sway for Snipers– I know it’s because the Move players don’t have sway and it is a balance for Dual Shock 3 users, but sniping feels a little too easy with no sway and one hit kills practically anywhere on the body.

Writing Pad Laptop Skin

Added by apolloeye 2011-03-03 16:08:43 in #technology

Some one should invent either a dry wipe or magnetic writing pad you can fix to the lid of your laptop, this would allow you to leave notes like "back in 5 minutes" when your away from your laptop and you could just wipe it away afterwards.

XMB Layout

Added by apolloeye 2011-03-13 19:12:50 in #entertainment

XMB Themes should not only change the icons and background but also the separate icon sizes and layout.
This would allow designers to create themes that totally change the XMB such as making it a vertical layout or grid navigation.

Subscription Based FPS

Added by apolloeye 2011-03-24 17:10:46 in #entertainment

A developer should invent a subscription based FPS, where you pay per month or per year.

This in turn will allow the developers to continually update the games engine, add news maps, modes and weapons. It would lead to a more fluid game, and could also lead to a bigger and bigger world being created for the game introducing story elements.

PSN Compensation: Score in $

Added by jimsymbol 2011-04-27 13:45:29 in #education

Once PSN is back a way to get us back online would be to convert our gamer score into dollars and give us this to spend on the store :-)

Tags: PSN, PS3, video games

As Compensation of PSN being offline we should all get cross game chat.

Tags: psn, chat, ps3

The PSN has been down for over a week, so how about a free PSN title each day for a week?

QR Codes on Sale Signs

Added by apolloeye 2011-04-29 07:56:21 in #business

Often I see "for sale" signs or "to let" signs in the street but I just want instant details about the place. These signs should have QR codes so that you can scan it with your phone and find the details instantly.

Progressive Barcode

Added by apolloeye 2011-04-29 07:59:21 in #technology

A new way of delivering information to a phone would be to have a barcode that streams information in binary form - this means you could point your phone at a video and the phone would capture the binary (or another method) to actually receive the information directly, say an app or other information.
It may not even need to be a video but it could be a GIF or even flash format.

Phase Break Lights

Added by apolloeye 2011-05-05 10:52:42 in #technology

It would be nice that on cars the brake lights were split into three segments, contained three different bulbs or increased in intensity depending on how hard someone is breaking.
So that if someone is lightly on the break the break lights will be quiet mild in brightness and the harder someone is braking the brighter the light to inform the people behind.

Bot damage

I have a great idea for Brink .You can't see to repair a bot or turret that is part damaged. You also can't damage a bot or turret be reapired, this should be changed as its frustrating.

Pull Down

Added by lipsandsync 2011-06-20 16:47:30 in #entertainment

I have a great idea for Infamous 2, sometimes when you are hanging on a ledge it would be good to be able to pull enemies down like Uncharted.
