How to stop the oil leak

Added by ubba5 2010-05-27 05:18:52 in #environment

I believe an inflatable bladder could stop or if nothing else significantly contain this leak. The principle is similar to the inflatable tool used to open and clean out a human artery. In this case it would have to be much larger and thicker to withstand the pressure. If oxygen is a problem at that depth then Nitrogen could be an alternative for inflation.

Amend bluetooth on phones so it can tell the direction of phones around it.
Then create a 'Singles' app that will allow other people with the app to see that your single and request your phone number.
The request would contain their picture so you can see who it was, you can choose to ignore or accept.

I believe it would be a good idea for politicians to wear (at least once a year) a ceremonial suit. On this suit would be patches and corporate logos of all his or her contributors. The politicians would look much like a racing car driver sporting chevrons of all the sponsors.

The patches should be sized according to percentage of contribution. For example, if a particular corporation contributes an amount that represents 5 per cent of the politician's total campaign fund then he would wear a patch that cover's 5 per cent of the 'special suit'.

It may seem like a humorous idea but think about it - once a year the media would have an opportunity to photograph this politician in his campaign finance suit for all to see. Anyone seeing the elected official covered with non-constituent donor patches would know what was going on. Long debates about campaign finance reform would immediately be put into perspective. At a glance we could all see who really pays for influence.

Volcanic ash and flights

Added by tweetiep 2010-05-26 07:55:29 in #environment

Ok so I appreciate there were many people who suffered terribly due to the disruption to flights caused by the volcanic ash.  Funerals were missed, weddings, celebrations and worst of all I guess some people didn't get the chance to say goodbye.  However, with enough warning - 2 years should be enough - why can't we have a no fly time every year, every month, every week even?  People could plan to get to where they need well in advance, the effect on the environment would be positive and, most of all people would APPRECIATE the world in which we live, where you can fly to the otherside of the world in 24 hours, speak to someone a thousand miles away, get information on anything, instantly.
I think we take too much for granted in the west and instead of whining when things go wrong why don't we be more grateful for this amazing place and all the people in it and enjoy it?

Recently I lost my beloved stepmother to cancer. She faced her illness with courage, humour and determination, and she helped her family deal with it in the same way.

During her final weeks in the hospital, she slept a good deal of the time, and consequently missed many of her visitors. She was disappointed when she didn't get to see them, so we placed a guest book on the table by her bed. If she was sleeping when a friend came by, the visitor signed it and left a message for her. When she awoke, she enjoyed reading the thoughts and memories, humorous stories, hopes and wishes.

After she died this book became the text of her eulogy. As it was read, her family and friends were able to laugh and cry together as they remembered this special woman.

I hope your readers will find our experience of value and use this idea in their own lives.

hook your device into the computer with the usb cable that standardly comes with it and magically it controls like a keyboard and mouse. just touch the keyboard on the Ipod/Iphone like a text with qwerty functioning and move your finger across the screen to make the mouse. This is kinda like how a psp could be hooked up to a playstation but it is a keyboard/mouse. simple! enjoy and god bless
this would make mouses and keyboards that much less great to buy.free app payed for by advertising. average price of keyboard anywhere from 10-50 dollars and up. average price of a mouse anywhere from 10-30 dollars and up. total savings of 20-80 dollars and up per person. so far this year there have been 111,152,000 computers sold and counting(http://www.worldometers.info/computers/) thats about 40 dollars times that number which is ideally 4,446,080,000 dollars saved buying them that doesn't even count production, materials and etc.
In Gods name Amen.

Wi-Fi Car Hotspots

Cars should have wireless built into them and be able to communicate with each other. The cars can act as wireless extenders sending a wireless Internet signal from car to car for all to use, for such things as Internet radio or pornography.
It could also be used to transfer information about traffic via the Internet that can help others.

Rainbow Coloured Car Parks

Added by mexecorulez 2010-05-21 16:00:06 in #lifestyle

Multi-storey car parks look the same on every level - unless you remember to look outside, or read the numbers, but when you're at the last minute for an appointment it is easy to forget to do that.

I can't be the only person who has had to go up from one level to another trying to find their car again, after parking it in a hurry. It would be an easy thing to distinguish the different levels by using different colours on the signage, and maybe the lift buttons, too....and people like me (who forget to read numbers), would probably remember the colour without any making any conscious effort. It's so much easier to recall when you come back from the car.

I'd suggest using the rainbow spectrum because there are so many methods for remembering it, eg Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain for Red (lowest Floor), Orange (next level up. etc), Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.

Taxing Spam Generating Companies

Added by mrbungay 2010-05-21 12:19:41 in #business

I propose a special tax on companies that generate spam email. It could go something like this: Companies, or individuals that send out mass emails are taxed 1 cent for every mailing they put out. This would not include emails that are legitimate; a large company sends out emails to "subscribers", or people who knowingly signed up to get thier newsletters, or "notices".

This tax would only include mass, random emails. I think that this might eliminate some needless spam, but even if it does not, more tax money will be generated, so as to cut down on other taxes that we have to pay.

Also, this would require companies to submit forms to the government to get "permission" to send out mass spam. Instead of simply trying to rid the internet of spam, much like we did with those annoying "spam" phone calls, we could raise much needed funds.

Laws of energyKarma does exist

Tags: Golden Rule, Law, Science

Outdated copyright, libel and censorship laws threaten a free , fair and safe internet. This issue also involves protecting/funding quality and balance in media/arts.

Drastic changes to copyright, libel and censorship laws needed to maintain democracy in the internet age!
The internet user protection directive.

THE ISSUE: The copyright, censorship and libel laws throughout the European Union were devised before the internet, and indeed from before recorded media. In order to protect freedom, privacy and intellectual property the very concepts have to be redefined. This problem has caused the following effects:

a) Due to the internets non-geographical nature, libel and other types of defamation legislation whether criminal or civil become almost randomly defined. Not just on the jurisdiction either- similar variation exists from court to court, as to the sentencing which can often vary from community service to a hefty jail sentence for the same offence
Libel is interesting because it concerns both privacy and freedom of information issues. On one hand, it is very important to protect the right of a person or group to not have their social lives, reputations or careers harmed by false or misleading stories.
On the other hand, we have the right to know of any misdemeanours concerning public figures, powerful figures or enterprises that we might be dealing with. And surely we dont want children (or young minded adults) barred from talking about the latest playground rumour about their favourite celebrities. Of course, this has huge implications for the culture of Satire which lightens heavy topics, as well as providing the entertainment that we have enjoyed since Shakespeare and before. Do we want a world where truth is defined by having the most expensive lawers?
This suggests that the only alternative to draconian censorship or outright anarchy is a targeted enforcement of defamation legislation. Such a move would involve limiting all forms of defamation prosecutions and lawsuits to cases where profit, gain or malice could be reasonably proven. As well as targeting the police and courtroom costs, essentially a finite resource, this brings the definition of free speech to the general public consensus. That is, it is acceptable to use all forms of free speech, without knowingly harming others with ones words.

b) Due again to the multi-jurisdictional nature of the internet, and the lack of co-operation between government authorities and rival software manufacturers, there is no coherent approach to the issue of properly censoring potentially offensive material on the internet. Fruitless effort is poured in to shutting down illegal or ethically questionableâ websites, FTP sites and chatrooms. What is more important, and more achievable is preventing children and the easily offended from accessing this material by accident or curiosity. As internet content is less rigidly controlled than the film, print or music industry, state censorship would be unworkable. However requiring all content creators to self rate their material on the same grounds as a DVD , could be achieved. Failure to rate correctly could be made a criminal offence. Software could be designed with a standardised content-rating system which would allow safer family enjoyment and warning properly displayed if the content was of a nature that could easily offend.

c) The enforcement and management of copyright law is impractical under current legislation. Digital media makes copying and converting media a matter of mouse clicks. All forms of a digital rights management systems are crackable- almost all of the worlds governments strictly forbid the commercial use of such sophisticated cipher technology on national security grounds. Also, to severely restrict the right of distribution of multimedia products is a violation of the rights of independent media producers who wish to use the internet as a showcase for there talent,. Perhaps even more importantly, make the films and records that Hollywood don’t want you to watch or hear. This amounts to a violation of the basic rights of free expression.
Producers of multimedia content of any kind need to be remunerated for their efforts. It is not a cheap or time-free affair to produce music, books or films even as a hobby. The people who make the TV and movies we enjoy are morally entitled to a fair degree of contribution toward financing their art from their audience.
There are two ways of improving the situation. Firstly, there needs to be the replacement of copy protection to copyright watermarking. Any uploads to the internet of copyright material would have to be digitally watermarked with a copyright license. This would allow media producers to tract their digital assets across the internet. Any enterprise attempting to extract profit or gain out of copyrighted work would be obliged to pay a reasonable surcharge.
However, copyright holders should only have the access to details of private domestic internet account holders in the event of uploads of copyright material. This is because it is impossible for a user to distinguish legal from illegal download sites and servers. Nor until the completion of the download is it possible to accurately determine whether the material is copyright and which licence it is subject to.
It needs to be an offence to upload copyrighted material until one year old onto the internet unless authorised to do so by the copyright holder. One year because of the pace at which the online community moves. Conventional copyright rules involves terms of between fifty and one hundred years. This is impractical due to the nature of the sheer volume of material available on line. It is most important to protect the livelihoods of those currently active in the industry, as this represents the media industry’s future. Other than that condition, like libel, copyright enforcements against domestic internet users should be considered only in cases of profit, gain or malice. Again, this is not a case so much of a liberal approach, but a practically and fairly enforceable one.
The issue of filesharing could be handled via a surcharge per gigabyte of copyrighted, unlicenced media download, with a clearing house system estimating from the details provided by watermarking and reimbursing the copyright royalties to the appropriate holder. The ISP would be surcharged by the copyright authorities as opposed to the end user to protect privacy. This would allow the end user to choose an ISP package that reflects their downloading habits. Those who download or share copyright material would need to be on a higher tariff than those who do not to cover the surcharge costs.

Study how teachers connect with students and make better connections. Could we as a society better match teachers with students from a personality basis?
I think that the public school system is just for throwing children into an adaptable situation but does every child adapt? Can we solve this adaptation problem. How can we better teach adaptation methods?
How can we better teach positive stress releases? What are positive stress releases? how can we better teach communication to children? Can there be a universal language?
A science of teaching?
Can we figure out what type of learner every person is?
Can we match teaching with types of learning?
A teaching of emotional studies in schools?

The Forest Garden

Added by rhart 2010-05-20 20:36:21 in #environment

After thirty years of study, research and practical experience in Agroforestry (see previous item), Robert Hart established a small modelforest garden on his farm on Wenlock Edge, a model that could be repeated many thousands of times even by those who possess only small town gardens.
'The Forest Garden can enable a family to enjoy a considerable degree of self-sufficiency, with minimal labour'

The Forest Garden can enable a family to enjoy a considerable degree of self-sufficiency, with minimal labour, for some seven months of the year, providing the very best foods for building up positive health. It is a miniature reproduction of the self-maintaining eco-system of the natural forest, consisting entirely of fruit and nut trees and bushes, perennial and self-seeding vegetables and culinary and medicinal herbs.

Robert Hart wrote: 'It is no good waiting for the Powers-That-Be to take decisive action in the infinitely serious crisis caused by wholesale forest destruction, curbed and restricted as they are by blind prejudice and vested interests. Those who care, the ordinary people, should take action themselves to restore the earth's depleted forest cover, even though they may live in cities.'

Once established after about two years, the Forest Garden is self-perpetuating, self-fertilising, self-watering, self-mulching, self-weed-suppressing, self-pollinating, self-healing and highly resistant to pests and diseases. The only work required is pruning, controlling plants that seek to encroach on each other, and mulching with compost once a year, after the herbaceous plants die down in the late autumn. It is:

- Self-perpetuating, because all plants are perennial or active seed-seekers, such as borage and cress; self-fertilising, because deep-rooting trees, bushes and herbs draw upon minerals in the subsoil and make them available to their neighbours, and because the complex should include edible legumes such as lucerne, which inject nitrogen into the soil.
'Self-watering, because deep-rooting plants tap the spring-veins in the subsoil'

- Self-watering, because deep-rooting plants tap the spring-veins in the subsoil, even at times of drought, and pump up water for the benefit of the whole eco-system.
- Self-mulching and self-weed suppressing, because the scheme includes rapidly spreading herbs, such as the mints, and perennial vegetables, such as Good King Henry, which soon cover all the ground between the trees and bushes and thus create a permanent mulch. In fact, one main problem is to check their pervasiveness in the interests of less dominating plants.
- Self-pollinating, because all the fruit and nut trees are chosen to be mutually compatible for pollinating purposes - unless self-fertile - and also because the scheme includes many aromatic herbs and vegetables such as tree-onions and wild garlic, which undoubtedly exert curative influences on their neighbours.

- Resistant to pests and diseases, not only on account of the aromatic plants but also because any complex consisting of a wide spectrum of different plants does not allow the build up of epidemics such as is formed in monocultures.

The scheme is very highly intensive, making use of all seven 'storeys' found in the natural forest for the production of economic plants. These 'storeys' are:

- The 'canopy' formed by the tops of the higher trees;
- The planes of low-growing trees such as dwarf fruits;
- The 'shrub layer' comprising bush fruits;
- The herbaceous layer of herbs and vegetables;
- The ground layer of plants which spread horizontally rather than vertically, such as creeping thyme;
- The vertical layer occupied by climbing berries and vines;
- The 'rhizosphere', shade-tolerant root-plants.

In order to achieve maximum economy of space, these devices are employed:

(1) Some of the vegetables and herbs are grown on mounds, erected in accordance with the German Hugelkultur system.
(2) Full advantage is taken of fences for training climbing berries, such as the Japanese wineberry, and fan-trained plums.
(3) An apple hedge has been created according to the French Bouche-Thomas system, in which the trees (Allington Pippins) are planted diagonally so that they grow into each other.
(4) A hardy Canadian Brant vine is trained over the tool shed and another is to be trained up an old damson tree.

There is a 'family tree', comprising three compatible varieties of English eating apples, Sunset, Discovery and Laxton's Fortune, grafted on to a single root stock.

Conventional horticulturalists will object that food plants cannot achieve full productivity when planted in such close proximity to each other. But, as the natural forest and even the herbaceous flower border demonstrate, many plants thrive best when grown close to plants of other species. The reasons for this are contained in the science of plant symbiosis, about which very little research has been undertaken, since Ehrenfried Pfeiffer invented his system of 'sensitive crystallisation'. This is a study which must be extensively developed if Agroforestry is to attain its full potential.
'Conventional horticulturalists will object that food plants cannot achieve full productivity when planted in such close proximity to each other'

The Forest Garden's produce is health-promoting: just as in the 16th and 17th centuries, when England produced an amazing number of men of exceptional hardihood and genius, a standard article of diet was a salad, called 'sallet' or 'salgamundy', comprising a wide variety of cultivated and wild vegetables, fruits and herbs.

As for the Forest Garden helping restore the earth's forest cover, if ten trees were planted in a hundred thousand gardens, that would amount to a million trees. Quite a forest!

An idea evolves over time. With input from many it can develop into something much better

It seems to me that Bigady could evolve into something much bigger. Linux, a community developed computer operating system has grown so it is now a rival to Microsoft Windows. Wikipedia.org a community developed encyclopedia has grown bigger than Encyclopedia Brittanica. Bigady, a communcally developed idea bank, has yet to grow big.

Why?

I think it because Bigady has yet to tap into the power of collaboration on an idea. On wikipedia.com people build on previously written entries. So over time the entry gets edited, clarified, added to, with many experts adding there talents to the writing.

The same thing could happen on Bigady. Once someone puts an idea up, people can add to it, spin variations, come up with suggestions to overcome technical difficulties with the idea, talk about the cultural paradigm the idea is embedded in, suggest ways to implement it, suggest resources to connect to, suggest people to contact, suggest money resources to connect to etc etc.

Each idea is like a seed, and the Bigady community can water that seed so that it grows into a tree on the website.

How this done exactly would still have to be worked out. Linux and Wikipedia have worked out there own solutions.

There could be a main and an original version of the idea up on the website. And there could be at times evolutionary branches of the idea offshooting.

One possibility is to implement the wiki software on the Bigady website.

Sign up to a one year marriage contract with the option, should both parties agree, to sign up for another year. The logic is simple. Like being on holiday for a set period of time one always has fun. However if you are having problems and there is an end in sight then partners have a better chance of separating on good terms.

There is also the added bonus of spreading your love over a lifetime and signing up to several contracts.

2) If you use remote play you still see ALL games that are on your PS3.  Why not only show me the ones i can play - rather then having to go through one by one to see if they are remote play compatable.

Abolish Money

Added by luc 2010-05-19 22:30:16 in #lifestyle

What would get the best result out of anyone? working to make a living or working to support life? while everyone says it can't be done, i'm sure it can...utopia? maybe but at least the result will be way better than the mess we live in today.

A systematical distribution of work and luxury...favouring or discriminating no-one. Many of you might laugh at the following (but for those with a brain it will at least make some sense) Economy is only a dream; farmers are paid to destroy part of their harvest in times of abundance, oil prices are based upon how many barrels are pumped up...if you can't see the dirty game being played all around us, you must be choosing NOT to see. and if you're thinking such world is not possible i ask you this, do you really need to be able to prey upon your neighbour before you will support him?

A world without money...not all that impossible and NEVER worse than the present time but half of every achievement is desire
....or are we such a rotten breed?

Social Activism Search Engine

Added by jillidle 2010-05-19 15:21:01 in #lifestyle

The internet develops in really extraodinary ways. We can exert an influence on the way it develops. Do we want it to become more commercial? Or more focused on healing the world? Or more newsy?

One way to make it focus on healing the world is to develop a specific search engine that searches for activism and social invention websites. In this search engine you could type specific problems like e.g. wetland preservation and the engine would sort sites into sites which have solutions to this problem and sites which are groups who are actively doing something about this problem.

A general search engine like google does not necessarily cater to the specific needs of a social invention/ social activist searcher.

By making it easier to search for websites, we also influence people to want to develop more of these websites.

Solar Collectors

Added by simonsays 2010-05-18 15:07:22 in #technology

To solve the problem with running out of fuel we should instead look to solar power.

We should place solar collectors in orbit of Earth that can collect sun light, convert it to electricity and beam it back to Earth via Microwaves.

The solar collectors would be ultra efficient as they would be outside of our atmosphere.

The Nutrient Recycling Soil Saving Program is, as the name implies, a way to recycle nutrients and save soil. It's essentially a mimic of the natural process of geology on a smaller time scale. It would be used to increase the nutrient value of agricultural products. One would create two basins one on top of the other The space between the two basins would allow a dredge pump to access the bottom of the lower basin. The first basin would be filled with soil and a drain would be located at the bottom to allow leach of nutrients. The second lower basin would collect the liquid and sediment and the dredge pump would pump the soil soup back to the top to be used on agricultural products once again. Gravel dust (see our global ideas bank's "Saving the Planet With Gravel Dust") could be used to supplement the soil and increase soil nutrients even further. Again these nurtients could be recycled through the dredge. Www.contourcrafting.org could be used to build the basins. Contour crafting is essentially robotically built structures.

an aside: I'm hoping to find an effective biotic "dredge pump" so this isn't patentable such as azolla, a nitrogen fixating plant used to fertilize rice paddy fields or the transpirational pull of larger trees.

I feel that someone's idea of a structured religion is false. Religion in its essence was a pure faith people had, with a lot of legends and myths.

But those shouldn't be worshiped like we do today, they should be respected as guidelines someone tried to show to the people.

Most of humanity does not realise that and thus by staying behind the time, stuck in the stuck up religions we have come to today is what makes us slow down with our progress; because what we find moral Church might not, religion might not, so those opinions clash and it gets really ugly.

I don't support any religion today, I think we are all free to believe in what we want, and we don't necessarily have to fit it into some of the existing religions. It is virtually impossible to agree with everything in one of the existing religions - unless we are blind and have no attitude of our own.

MP Cap

Added by Apolloeye 2010-05-13 21:20:32 in #politics

I feel to breed a higher calibre of MP in the UK government there should be an upper cap on MP salaries comparable to what teachers earn.

This will lead to people seeking the job because they actually want to do it rather than those lusting after money.

Fluidic Speed Bumps

Added by Apolloeye 2010-05-13 15:54:21 in #technology

The idea is quite simply. Create speed bumps that are filled with a viscose fluid. This way cars that are travelling the correct speed will be able to disperse the fluid without getting a bump. Cars travelling too fast will get a bump as the car will not be able to push the fluid away fast enough.

The system would need to employ some sort of reservoir system and ensure it is vandal-proof.

To Bigady or to Boo...

To Bigady something is a slang term used to promote something you like, simply hit the heart icon on any idea. To boo something is to, well, boo it, show that you dislike the content by clicking the down arrow icon on any idea.

Every idea will have an icon within the left of its module. A star icon means the idea is new and the clock icon with an exclamation mark means its old. A smiley face means the idea is popular and oppositely an unhappy face not popular. Finally the icon with arrows pointing up and down means the idea is contended - a similar amount of people like the idea compared to those who don't.
